Financial Phobia Lives in the Nervous System, Not the Bank Account

"I looked at it with angst. When is that going to go out? When’s it going to go down?"

She was talking about her business checking account. An amount most business owners only wish they had. And she had anxiety over it.

Nothing was wrong. The bills were covered. The next client was coming. The money was there, real, substantial, earned. And her nervous system could not feel it. Instead it did what it had always done, it braced. It waited. It scanned the horizon for the thing that was about to go wrong, because in her experience, something always did.

I want you to sit with that for a moment, because I think it is one of the most important things I can tell you about financial phobia. It is not a problem that gets solved by making more money. The woman sitting across from me was a multi-six figure business owner with real revenue coming in every month, and she could not feel safe with what was already in her account.

The anxiety does not live in the bank account number or the Profit and Loss statement. It lives in the nervous system. And until you work with the nervous system, the number can grow and grow and the anxiety will simply grow alongside it.

She described it to me during one of our sessions and I recognized it immediately. That low-grade, persistent hum of worry that sits underneath everything no matter how well things are going.

The checking and rechecking.

The mental calculations running in the background of every purchase, every decision, every moment of potential ease.

She was not doing this because she was bad at business or bad with money. She was doing it because her whole life had taught her that ease was temporary and disaster was always around the corner. Her nervous system was not broken. It was doing exactly what it had been trained to do, keep her safe.

She named it herself, which is always the most powerful moment in this work.

"There is a difference between wisdom and fear-based hoarding."

Between being a good steward of money and white-knuckling it out of terror. She could feel the difference in her body. She just had not known how to stop doing the second one.

And then something else surfaced, something she had never said out loud before. A belief she had been carrying just as long as all the others.

"I am afraid I cannot do it alone without a man or a partner."

She said it almost carefully, the way you say something you have been not-saying for a very long time. I did not challenge it in that moment. I just let her hear herself say it, because sometimes the most powerful thing is simply to get a belief out of the dark and into the light where you can finally look at it.

"Is that actually true?"

She was the one who had been carrying her family financially for years. She was the one who had built something real, largely on her own, from a layoff and a leap of faith. And as she sat with the question, I watched the belief begin to crack. She could see it herself. The evidence had been there the whole time. She had just never been asked to look at it directly.

She was not fully ready to let it go yet. That moment was coming, I could see it in her eyes, something had shifted. The belief that had been running silently in the background of her financial life for decades had finally been spoken out loud, examined, and found to be a little less solid than it had always seemed.

Stay tuned, because next week I will share what happens when we open QuickBooks together for the first time. And when the numbers come up on the screen, that belief does not just crack, it dissolves completely.
