How Well Do You Know Your Business Numbers?

Maybe she knows her revenue number without even having to check. Maybe she knows her bank balance just as well, and knows exactly what number makes her nervous when it dips below it. Maybe she knows she has to pay her team this week, and is already quietly doing the math on where that money is going to come from.

She knows all of that. It is the numbers that stress her out, the ones that keep her up at night. But there are other numbers, the ones that could actually help her breathe, if only she knew them. She has likely never been shown how to find out which client is really her most profitable, or whether her biggest expense is even earning its keep.

Here are the questions that, once she knows the answers, will not only help her sleep at night, they will help her grow her business.

One of the first things I tell a woman when she starts working with me is that she is finally going to know her monthly nut, the amount it actually takes to run her business every single month. Every time, without fail, she exhales. It is as though she has been holding her breath for years, running her business on instinct and hope, and suddenly she has solid ground under her feet.

That number alone changes how she sees everything else. Once she knows what it takes to run her business each month, she can ask the next question that matters, how much revenue it actually takes to turn a profit once that number is covered. From there, the rest of the picture starts to come into focus.

She can look at which of her clients is actually her most profitable, and which of her services earns her the most for the time and energy it takes. She can look at whether her expenses are trending up or down, and whether her largest expense is actually producing value or just quietly draining her. She can see which months were her most and least profitable, and what made the difference between them.

She can know how much cash is actually available to her right now, not just what is sitting in the account today, but what is truly hers to use. She can compare this month to the months before it, instead of guessing whether things are getting better or worse. And she can look at whether she is making real progress toward the financial goals she has set for her business, instead of hoping she is and never actually checking.

It only takes getting curious enough to ask these questions, and having someone who can help her find the answers.

Here are the nine questions worth asking yourself this week.

  1. Which client is most profitable?
  2. Which service is most profitable?
  3. Are your expenses trending up or down?
  4. Is your largest expense producing value?
  5. How much revenue does it take to make a profit each month?
  6. Which months were most and least profitable?
  7. How much cash is actually available?
  8. How does this month compare with prior months?
  9. Are you making progress toward your financial goals?
