Is Having a Bookkeeper and a CPA Enough to Run a Profitable Business?
She has a bookkeeper who enters the information every month, so the books stay current and nothing falls through the cracks. She has a CPA who files her taxes every year. Somewhere along the way, she quietly decided that meant this part of the business was covered, and she could stop thinking about it. And so she did.
The essentials are covered, or so she thought. But there comes a point in her business, often around multi-six figures, where if she wants to keep growing, she needs something more. She makes a hiring decision blindly, fingers crossed she can cover the salary. She makes a business or marketing investment and wonders if she will be able to cover it. Or she considers opening a new location. Secretly she wonders why the heck she can't pay herself more at this point. She makes decisions based on her gut, her intuition, with absolutely nothing to tell her if it is the right one. She gets surprised by a large tax bill and wonders why she did not have the cash to cover it, and why no one ever told her this was coming.
Her CPA has hundreds of clients, and tax season alone leaves little room for anything beyond what the return requires. Her bookkeeper is an expert at data entry, skilled at keeping the numbers accurate and current, but she does not have an accounting degree, and she has not been trained to look at the information, question it, or show her how to use it to make important business decisions. Neither one is failing her. They are simply doing the job they were hired and trained to do, and that job was never designed to include asking why the numbers look the way they do, or what she should do next because of it.
She might feel like something is missing, but she is not sure what that is. She only knows that she does not have the perspective she needs to keep growing, information that looks at the whole picture instead of one piece of it, that takes what has already happened in her business and tells her what it means for what happens next.
If the information she is seeing even makes sense for a business her size. If what her two other professionals are doing is accurate, because after all, she is responsible for all of it. If the business is actually healthy, and if not, how to make it healthy. To prepare for her tax bill instead of being surprised by it. To know what she can afford to do next, and when.
This is the piece she was never told, when she hired her bookkeeper and her CPA, that there would come a point where those two roles alone would not be enough. She was never told that her books and her filed return would become the minimum, not the whole picture.
So when she reaches this point and feels unsure, finds herself guessing, she assumes it means something about her. Maybe she should know this by now. But how would she, if no one ever taught her?
Having a greater understanding does not mean she needs to become a financial expert herself. It means finally having information that connects the dots for her, information that shows her what her numbers are actually saying about her pricing, her profitability, her cash, and her next decision, in language she can use. It means the next hiring decision, the next investment, the next number she agrees to pay herself, is made with clarity instead of a held breath.
That is the second pillar of financial confidence. Not more data, and not more discipline. Perspective.
