What If Money Is Your Leadership Tool?
"What if money is your leadership tool?" I said to her.
She is one of the best leadership coaches I have ever met. Truly. The kind of woman who walks into a room and people naturally orient toward her. She has built a multi-six-figure business through sheer force of will, helped dozens of clients step into their power, and yet, she cannot look at her own numbers.
Not won’t. Cannot.
I knew within the first few minutes of working with her why.
Money had never been neutral in her life. Not once. From childhood forward, money had been used as a tool for control, by the people she loved most. That experience had embedded itself deep in her subconscious, shaping every financial decision she made, long after those circumstances were behind her. She had survived things that would have stopped most people. And through sheer force of will, she had built something remarkable. But the same wiring that kept her safe during the hard years was now the thing standing between her and the next level.
She lived braced for impact, always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I wish I could tell you this was rare. It is not. In fact, it is one of the most common patterns I see in women who have built multi-six-figure businesses. The details of the story change. The emotional imprint is almost always the same. Money was never just money. It was control, or shame, or scarcity, or survival. Or it became a report card, a constant judgment of whether they were good enough, capable enough, successful enough as a business owner. And no matter how much they have achieved, that imprint is still quietly running the show.
This is why I do not start with the numbers.
I know that surprises people. I am a CFO-trained strategist. Numbers are my native language. But what I have learned after years of working with women at this level is that the numbers are rarely the real problem. The relationship with money is. And you cannot build a healthy relationship with something you are terrified of, or something your nervous system has been trained to treat as a threat, as never enough, as something that will always run out.
So we work on that first.
I use NeuroCoaching tools to get underneath the story the subconscious is running. Because that story is running constantly, whether you are looking at your Profit and Loss Statement or not. It shows up in how you price. In how you pay yourself. In whether you can hold what you earn without anxiety clawing at you the moment you see a balance in your account.
She told me that when she looks at her business account and sees a strong balance sitting there, her first thought is not "look what I built." It is "when is this going to disappear?"
That is not a cash flow problem. That is a survival program still running long past its expiration date.
The turning point came quietly, the way real shifts usually do.
She shared something she had noticed that week, a moment so small she almost dismissed it. She had made a commitment to a client, a financial one, and when she heard herself say it, she stopped. Because her old self would have followed that promise with an internal voice asking can I actually afford that? This time, there was nothing. She just… meant it. She said it and moved on without a second thought.
She caught herself and said: "That is me now."
That is what the shift looks like. Not a dramatic breakthrough. A quiet, undeniable change in who you are in relationship with money. After just one session.
And then I asked her something I had been holding onto since our first session.
"What if money is your leadership tool?"
She went still.
I watched her process it. The leadership coach who had spent her career helping others step into their authority, being asked to bring that same energy to her own finances. To stop seeing her numbers as something to survive and start seeing them as something to wield.
She said: "It’s like money has been the eraser. And now we’re finally going to use the other end of the pencil."
Yes. Exactly that.
Here is what I know to be true, after seeing this work unfold across dozens of clients: the women who are stuck just below the next level are almost never stuck because they lack strategy. They are stuck because somewhere in their history, money became unsafe. It became a source of control, or shame, or scarcity, or loss. And that experience is living in the body right now, shaping every financial decision usually without them even realizing it.
The numbers do not lie. But they also do not tell the whole story. Your relationship with what those numbers mean, that is where the real work lives.
I told her I want her to be practically begging me to look at her financials before we take that step together. We are not there yet. And that is exactly right. Because when we get there, when she is ready, truly ready, to use her money as a leadership tool and then there will be no ceiling on what she can build.
I have seen businesses grow by multiples. Revenue doubling, tripling, more. Profit margins expanding by 20%, 50%, even 1,000%, yes, that number is real. That is what becomes possible when the strategy and the emotional capacity to hold more arrive at the same time.
She is getting there. And I already know her results are going to be extraordinary, I can’t wait.
If you are reading this and something in her story feels familiar, that low-grade anxiety when you look at your bank account, that bracing for impact, that voice asking when is this going to disappear, I want you to know you are not alone. I see this every single week. In brilliant, accomplished, high-achieving women who have built something real and still cannot fully let themselves feel safe inside of it.
This is the work. And it is available to you.
